For Memorial Day- Greatest (American) War Movies

Definition - to qualify as a 'war movie', there must be a battle or some combat in one of America's historical conflicts. Thus 'Casablanca' or 'Dr. Strangelove' do not qualify, although some people categorize them as war movies.

Here are my selections, please add some of yours.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR

The Patriot - The pickings are slim for this category. This is not really a great movie, but it's about the best of the lot. For some reason Hollywood has never shown must interest in the war for independence.

________________________

CIVIL WAR

Glory

Red Badge Of Courage - underrated film depicts the attitudes and confusions of simple country boys caught up in a vast violent conflict

Gettysburg

WORLD WAR ONE

The Fighting 69th

What Price Glory?

WORLD WAR TWO

Band Of Brothers - In my opinion, this is the best war movie ever made. Also the best thing ever created for television, although Lonesome Dove is a close second.

Saving Private Ryan

Bataan - I would recommend this for younger people who don't watch many old movies or b&w. This is a prime example of the 'propaganda' film of the WW@ era. The 'Japs' are treacherous sorts who play dead and then bayonet Americans in the back. They also charge headlong into withering machine gun fire for no apparent reason.

Patton

They Were Expendable

The Longest Day - Not really a great movie, but gives considerable detail of D-Day operations, as you would expect from a film based on a Cornelius Ryan book.

The Sands Of Iwo Jima

The Thin Red Line- the first time I saw this film I was underwhelmed, but I went back and watched it again and gained great respect for it. The philosophy of despair and acceptance.

Hell Is For Heroes - prototypical Steve Mc Queen characterization. Very underrated movie.

________________________________________

KOREAN WAR

Pork Chop Hill

The Bridges At Toko-Ri

MacArthur

_______________________________________

VIETNAM WAR

Platoon

Apocalypse Now

The Siege Of Firebase Gloria - poor acting and a little weak on production values, but depicts all out action at times that is very exciting.

The Boys In Company C - one of the first Hollywood films about Nam. Introduced R. Lee Ermey (Full Metal Jacket) to movie audiences.

We Were Soldiers - Mel Gibson gives a very underrated performance as a US Army colonel sent with his small force as guinea pigs to test combat tactics against the North Vietnamese in 1965.

POST 1980 'WARS'

Uncommon Valor

Blackhawk Down

Courage Under Fire

The Hurt Locker

___________________________

MISCELLANEOUS

The Alamo - both the Wayne version and the newer one.

Geronimo - An American Legend

While this is in a way a war movie, though no combat is seen in the movie, it is the movie

    Taking Chance

The true story of Lt. Col. Michael Strobl (played by Kevin Bacon) escorting the body of Marine PFC Chance Phelps back to his hometown. PFC Chance Phelps died in the Iraq War.

This movie shows what all happens of escorting a fallen soldier home, though this was a private funeral. It is so beautiful, so touching to watch, as it is simple, not overly dramatic, there is no character based story behind it, it is simply the procedure undertaken of bringing fallen soldiers home and the process, and the reactions of honor paid by military, former military and civilians.

It is such a touching movie to watch I cry every time I do watch it, especially during the civilian procession as Bacon is driving the coffin back to the small hometown and over drivers on the road all know and turn on their headlights and follow in honor.

        Cool novel too.

It is the only book ever confiscated by a teacher as I read it in a high school study hall in 1964.

I'll second the great escape and add "bat-21" & " in harms way"

Both 'The Great Escape' and 'In Harms Way' are in the rotation on AMC and TMC. Both really good movies.

              Sgt. Pepper

Patton is my favorite hands down. World War II movies seem in my view to be the best ones. I was really disappointed with The Pacific though.

Post 1980s: Anyone seen the HBO series Generation Kill? I'd definitely recommend it if you haven't.

Won't repeat what has already been mentioned.

Pre-U.S., but French and Indian War is still technically "American" -- The Last Mohican.

Sergeant York is a classic WWI film.

Always enjoyed watching Midway as WWII flick.

Helmet For My Pillow by Robert Leckie is a great first hand written account of Guadalcanal. I think there's a movie too.

Wing and A Prayer wasn't a bad WWll aircraft carrier movie.

Bridges of Toko-Ri about the Korean War was mighty good. Mickey Rooney did a great job.

Wake Island is a good movie about that battle in 1941-42, as I recall.

The best thing I like about all these films is the battles, you really feel like your there. Good question on this Memorial weekend.

Slightly off-topic as they are not American war movies, but great movies nonetheless:

                    Paths of Glory
All Quiet on the Western Front
                    Das Boot

The Longest Day was the first non-animated movie I saw in a theater with my Dad. War movies are the genre best viewed on the big screen. He would have loved Saving Private Ryan.

                      Best war movies:

                      Mister Roberts

                      The Caine Mutiny

The Manchurian Candidate (too leftist, I know, but a good movie)

                      Band of Brothers

                      Sergeant York

Tora Tora Tora (well, not the best maybe, but I saw it at the theatre when I was a kid and liked it)

                      Path to 9-11

                      Saving Private Ryan

                      Yellow Rose of Texas

                      Outlaw Josey Wales

                      Gods and Generals

                      Bridge Over the River Kwai

                      Pan

                      John Adams

The Alamo (had to include a john wayne movie)

                      Gone With The Wind

South Pacific (had to include a musical, I guess)

                      The Manchurian Candidate

The first one right? IMO, the 2004 adaptation kinda sucked.
