Venus Williams shocks with nude and skimpy outfit

n her triumphant first round win, Williams debuted a get-up better suited for a dancer at the Moulin Rouge. Understated elegance it was not. Wearing a corseted black lace top with dark red trim and frequently busting out of her skirt exposing nude biker shorts, on-lookers felt like voyeurs peeping an intimate bedroom session. Naturally, Williams has the fashion and tennis worlds abuzz.

She says she wanted to create an 'illusion'.

The illusion seemingly was meant to be that she didn't have any underwear on.

Trashy.

Well, she looks fine--but the look was thoroughly inappropriate for Roland Garros.

Gee, Venus, that was just tacky... She should've known better!

I'm a prude about what is acceptable on Main Street and sporting events. Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction was a national disgrace and I really don't think a lot of the Kalvin Klein ads are suitable for city buses and billboards.

I think we are entitled to community standards that allow a person to not be titillated sexually unless they want to be. If I were at the game, I would have been angered a bit.

On the other hand, I don't care what people do discretely.

She is an absolutely amazing tennis player, but I really don't get why she or Serena are using tennis or tennis matches to make fashion statements. Sorry tennis is about the sport, about the players, about the shots, the athleticism and not trying to make some cofuffle or wanting to make a cofuffle with your outfit. People will then talk about the outfits and not the sport, it becomes a distraction.

It kind of feels like it is cheapening the sport.

you don't get why someone would want to pick a moment when millions of people are watching to make a statement?

Sorry tennis is about the sport, about the players,

so why does anybody care what they wear? Why does Wimbledon require all white?

It kind of feels like it is cheapening the sport.

Venus won the match 6-3, 6-3. I think her opponent cheapened the sport more than any outfit could. You know, since it's all about the shots and the athleticism and all...

of course, it is tennis. Not like it's a real sport where the functionality of the outfit is what drives the fashion.

Myyyy..I am tolerant but that was a very gross image...I've been traumatized!...tacky is not the word...what is wrong with her? Her style? All the Money in the world can't buy you...reminds me of the thing Whitney Houston has been going through...is there a relation?

Very unhealthy...I've said enough.Does she need this as a publicity stunt?

greck--

Well here is a thought like all other fashion designers try FASHION WEEK instead of a tennis court where the purpose is the sport not the clothes. Hey what an idea.

so why does anybody care what they wear? Why does Wimbledon require all white?

You had to just ask why they were white at Wimbledon? It is because then everyone is uniform and the clothes are not a distraction not the talking point of the championship but the TENNIS the sport is the talking point.

Venus won the match 6-3, 6-3. I think her opponent cheapened the sport more than any outfit could. You know, since it's all about the shots and the athleticism and all...

WTF so someone loses a match and that is cheapening the sport? That is one pathetic comment. Someone has to lose in the match, bloody hell your comment was ridiculous.

of course, it is tennis. Not like it's a real sport where the functionality of the outfit is what drives the fashion.

WTF? Why do you keep making asinine comments?

Certainly put starch back in the tennis world's uppity type collars. Was quite a bit risque. You guys know hit that booty given half the chance. Navratilova might come back just to get close to Venus.

Well here is a thought like all other fashion designers try FASHION WEEK instead of a tennis court where the purpose is the sport not the clothes. Hey what an idea.

so, you'd rather have a semi-famous model on the runway for 20 seconds wearing your outfit (and as far as I know, tennis dresses aren't much of a focus during fashion week anywhere) during a barely televised event than a VERY famous tennis star, wear it for two hours during a heavily televised event?

ok, well, good luck with that marketing strategy, then.

WTF so someone loses a match and that is cheapening the sport?

yes, someone unable to compete makes the sport not at all interesting, not at all...sporting. That cheapens it.

The outfit is the talk mostly because it's the only interesting thing that happened on the court that day. The shots, the athleticism, well, there wasn't any to talk about; so we talk about what was actually on the court. There certainly wasn't much of a tennis match, but there was an interesting outfit.

WTF? Why do you keep making asinine comments?

"She's basically portraying herself as a piece of meat."

And please tell me, is this not what men have basically established for women? These days, if woman doesn't show some meat, men have no interest. Has there ever been a Seed about the Williams sisters until now? We only have our selves to blame...when you get right down to it! (hey, and I said "WE")

Do we want to talk about "Men's perception of women"? A "piece of meat"...that's pretty superficial. I'm sure that's NOT what she intended...but just a man's perception.

I'm saying if all one sees is a "piece of meat", that says more about men's perceptions of women, than what Venus was intending. And even though several of my posts reflect that "piece of meat" idea (and I am ashamed of myself...but damn!), I'm not about to say that's what "SHE" intended...it's just MY old, lusty self trying to get MY groove thang on! I won't blame it on her...I think Venus is a fine woman, and person...I wouldn't dare, in her face/presence attempt to treat her like a "piece of meat".

...but I really don't get why she or Serena are using tennis or tennis matches to make fashion statements.

Pro Tennis has ALWAYS been a magnet for fashion statements since WHOEVER took the full length skirts off & wore a mini.

If she wants to do a fashion show of herself or do a photo shoot in Hustler, fine! But this stunt was nothing more than "Look at Me" "Look at Me" mentality. What total BS and a complete lack of respect for her opponent Patty Schnyder who had to compete against her. The MSM will give her all the positive attention she so adores while she spits in the face tennis that has made her rich! Class and sportsmanship cannot be taught I guess!

I guess you have never seen the outrageous outfits that another American, Mattek-Sands wears. She has toned it down since she married, but in the past she was busting out everywhere with her fat rolls. I do agree though, the nude shorts were a bit much yesterday, but then again, the French aren't much for modesty and covering up.

I think you know what I meant. I doubt the French minded too much. They are pretty open with that sort of fashion. I've seen more than a few female tennis players with their butt cheeks hanging out of their shorts in the past during matches. Not like what Venus had on of course, but their butt cheeks were showing as well.

My point was that Venus took it to another level, I think. I don't follow tennis fashion but I don't recall ever seeing a woman player deliberately creating the illusion that she wasn't wearing any drawers.

What about Payne Stewart? He was well known for making fashion statements in an arguably uptight & stodgy sport.

The Williams sisters broke barriers and are setting records in the world of tennis. Not to diminish their talent or reflect race, Venus`s attire were totally inappropriate and she is one eighty degrees from the word attractive. I will say the same of Golda Meir, Margaret Thatcher, or any other ground breaking woman who wore that type of clothing. This does not make me either a sexist or bigot, it would be the same if someone seen a middle aged fat (fill in the race of your choice or leave blank for ethnicity neutral) guy on the beach in a speedo.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and Venus to me is not at all attractive. Think of Billie Jean King. Chrissie or Everett in that outfit even in their prime would they been considered attractive and or sexy?

Think what you want, but I scored high enough to be in Avionics...I highly doubt you qualified for that, as only the top 10% of the AF can even sniff that AFSC.

And Luke is who exactly? Am i suppose to somehow care who you are friends with?

I do watch tennis, and enjoy the sport very much; I have tickets to the US Open late summer.

Venus and Serena enjoy wearing scandalous outfits to get the tongues wagging. They say they're fashionistas. Well, imho, they're trying to promote their idea of a tennis clothing line.

I doubt you would get one step onto a Country Club tennis court wearing such a scandalous piece.

It's trashy, it's inappropriate, and Venus knows that. She just likes to push the envelope.

I ALWAYS root for both Venus and Serena, and they are phenomenal to watch. However, their choice in clothing is lacking at best, and the sport of tennis is not about watching an "illusion," of someone's backside.

This lady being one of the worlds all time great tennis stars also has a large line of womens fashions and will probably make 5 times more on them than palin did with her lie to me tour. These pictures will do the trick.

BTW there are many twat/behind picture of female tennis players that are worse than this as she has on clothes. It is just the illusion by having nude colored clothes under he dress. Much to do about nothing here. Move on

I didn't take the ASVAB as I joined the Air Force in 1976 after almost 3 years in the Navy as an OPERATION SPECIALIST 3rd class. On the AFQT , I scored a 60 , that was about as high as you can score. I score High enough for my GCT/ARI to be 120 , which qualified me for the Naval Academy , and ended up disqualifying myself with a Captain's Mast , dashing my hopes of being a Naval Officer , but it didn't matter , my security clearance as an officer would have unearthed the fact that I enlisted underage at 16.

                http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operations_Specialist_(US_Navy)

One of the TOP non nuclear jobs in the Navy. You must be in the top percentile in order to be an Operations Specialist.

I joined the Air Force in 1976 , Open General , and despite being having the highest AFQT score in my flight , the Air Force made me a 811XX/3POX1 Security Police until 1980 when I cross trained into 276XX/1C5X1 Aerospace Control and Warning Systems Technician ( NORAD/ADTAC/SPACECOM ) having had previous radar experience , I graduated in the top of my class at Keesler Air Force Base , Control and Warning Systems School . Identification , Weapons, Forward Air Control .

                http://usmilitary.about.com/od/airforceenlistedjobs/a/afjob1c5x1.htm

DUMMIES DON'T QUALIFY FOR THAT SCHOOL.

Being the ass you are , you're taking an observation and elevating it to the height of the complete idiocy that you're known for , I stated it resembled a skinhead tatoo , knowing Luke Wright as a FRIEND , it was probably a erroneous observation , but I wasn't the only one who made it. An error , something MEN admit to , and Luke Wright and I have discussed personally , If you were half a man , you'd admit to some of the BULL@!$%# that you post being wrong , but as I earlier stated , ONLY men admit when they make errors. You have nothing to go on so you like a whiny child harp on one mistaken observation that Luke and I cleared up months ago because you have nothing else but your ignorant wit and your racist innuendo.

If you're married to a black woman which I doubt , she'd either divorce or shoot your ass if she read the crap you posted.

After I got out of the Air Force by the way , on a medical , VA Vocational Rehabilitation sent me to College for 10 years , my first degree was in Accounting Data Processing , my second was in Human Resources Management , and my last one was in Theology on my own , trying to figure out the workings of the religious mind.

Your assumptions , well , of course the word starts with ASS ,so the rest is easily surmised. You know Jack and if you knew jack , he would pimp slap you as you are one who hardly commands respect enough to address civilly.

                Avionics ?? Nothing special .....

You assume much more than you know , but when you know nothing , assumptions are your entire being.

Funny that Luke and I don't hold a grudge , but a simple minded nobody like you does.

Ms Allen - first, Ms Williams has a shape most women would envy, and perhaps intimidating to certain males? Hence, her choice of garments is merely a reflection of what she chooses to wear since she can obviously wear anything, tennis notwithstanding. But I DO have a question vis a vis your friend who married the AF nurse and converted to Islam? From what I know (And I am not an expert by any means) females in Islam (as females in orthodox Judiasm) are not usually permitted to undertake careers such as medicine/nursing since both involve touching men. I am curious how the AF nurse, an officer I would think, managed to combine her traditional Islamic cultural and social beliefs into military nursing? . While I realize these women DO perform health care related tasks in their native countries, it has always been my experience (a retired naval officer/medical corps) that they do so under the constraints Koranic teachings which is usually interpreted as caring only for women and chldren. I met and worked with many military nurse corps officers during my active duty and reserve years and never encountered an Islamic nurse on active duty. We did however, engage the nursing services of a young woman once in a field hospital in Bosnia many years ago, she was Muslim but a civilian, who helped us more with interpretation difficulties than with any medical care since we were very well staffed with excellent nurse corps officers AND skilled corpsmen. But as to my original question for you, the only exception I found to this rule was in Tunisia where remarkable freedoms exist for women though a country steeped in Islam as well. I think it just goes to prove that there are very wide gaps in how middle east governments interpret the Koran and how they achieve democracy in spite of the many fundamentalist leanings which seek to control women and make them subservient to the men. It is a very interesting country both politically and socially). So, your comment vis a vis the MSgt piqued my curiousity. PS - Loved that SR, sad it's retired..............Satellites are nowhere near as cool! Best to you.

                Anyway -

As an aside, while I scan NV from time to time when my schedule permits, I often wonder about posts like these and sad to see they become such hotbeds of anger. Since we are all essentially strangers to each other, why do those who post in ways contrary to our beliefs have the power of evoke such fervent anger? They mean NOTHING, yet we give them power over our psyche and do battle with them on this field of internet nothingness? I've got a son in Kandahar right now. God help him and every warrior over there. They're dealing with a mind set THOUSANDS of years old and sadly one based in hate. If we cannot relieve ourselves of hate HERE in the void of meaningless web based drivel, what hope do we have to 'win' (whatever THAT means) halfway across the globe. WHO is our enemy, anyway? Something to ponder while we enjoy Ms. Williams garments (or not).

I left in 89, sounds like you worked on phantoms (F4e/g`s) also about the time the 15s were replacing them when you switched back to the 915x0 AFSC

Yep, the F4-E at SJAFB. I had the chance to switch to the 15s, but wanted to go to Nellis and work on the A-10s instead...but the AF had other plans for me and stuck me back in my original AFSC (915x0). They actually did me a favor, as I get paid a nice amount to teach sailors the computer application we used when i was AD.

Yep, not a fan of her looks. Still, if Sharapova, back in her prime modeling years, wore the same outfit, I'd be crying foul, too.

This is one of the few times I'm generally agreeing with JohnRussell. Dressing like a $2 stripper on the court during the French Open is essentially giving the finger to your own sport. But then again, Venus has never been known for her etiquette or propriety on the court, so I suppose if any player were to fake bottomless nudity, she'd be a prime candidate.

Jack, I gotta give you credit for putting it in the right words. Intention, as it often is, is the key here. Venus intended to fake bottomless nudity at one of the most prestigious events in her sport. Frankly, a psychiatrist may be in order for her. She has some unresolved issues somewhere in there.

Goldsboro BBQ, I think Scotts is some of the best, and Altons is also good Kings? it that on 70 heading towards Kinston?

Wilburs of course is the towns pick, and also excellent , they used a wood fire great taste. Hands down winner for cracklin and skins was the BBQ across from Dewey Bros. I worked as an electrician part time while stationed at SJ and the aroma was almost as good as the taste, gained alot of weight at that job. LOL

She wore the same outfit, with the same flesh colored shorts today. No one asked her not to wear them at the tournament. No one in the tennis world seems to be outraged by it, or is making such a fuss about it, like the other players, the sponsors, the people putting on the tournament, or the fans watching the tournament in the stands in Paris. It doesn't seem to be a big deal to them, so why should it be made into a big deal here.

I think that picture, focused dead on her butt, kind gave a misleading aspect to what she was wearing. If all people ever saw was that picture, and didn't see any of the tennis match, it's understandable they'd react as some have. I get it.

You don't have the propensity to care about anything but yourself.

That much has already been noted.

The job of an Operations Specialist can be very intense and stressful while the ship is underway. They need to be able to think quickly, drawing on a large reserve of tactical and procedural knowledge and be able make calculations on the fly in the fast-paced and information-saturated environment of naval combat operations.

I saw an interview that had her sister on and they both are making a killing with their lines. for every prude that disproves there are 10 waiting in line to wear their clothes. A great marketing trick!

Back in the 70s there was a big rancor over Chrissie Evert having the nerve to wear a diamond bracelet to a match. The name long ago passed into the vernacular: Tennis bracelet. Who cares anymore. If Ms. Williams wishes to launch her line of clothing she has the freedom to do so. Tennis and Golf, once the stodgy province of waspy skeletor whitemaleonly exclusive clubs, has morphed into everyman's game and even to the game on the street. It's good for tennis - better plays who'd never have been discovered otherwise. I'd rather see the Williams Sisters, who never hid the fact that they were straight outta Compton, wear their 'gett-OH!" duds than watch Tiger grace the fashion page of Gold Digest in full PING regalia (No disrespect mean to PING). The Williams sisters never tried to play their (tennis) game any other way than the way they are. Don't like it? Don't buy it. I do wish they wouldn't throw up gang signals, however, which they did in their 'got milk' campaign. I trust they've stopped doing that now that they're older and wiser.

What if Tiger Woods had married Venus Williams?

Why would someone intentionally create the look that they are not wearing underwear? Just explain that to me. Is that the 'ghetto' look you are bragging about?

I don't know anything about the " Ghetto " and never bragged about " the Ghetto look ".

Talk about a racially insensitive comment.

Take your limited mind back two years to the Presidential debates , the skirt Sarah Palin had on was so tight you could make out the crack of her behind.

Many people thought it distasteful for a Vice Presidential Candidate to be wearing something so tight and revealing , instead of , perhaps the tasteful pantsuits that Hillary Clinton usually wore , of course , I'll admit that Hillary Clinton doesn't have Sarah's figure , that's the only thing I can give her credit for , but more is expected of a VP candidate than tight skirts , and I am not the only person who can recall John McCain staring at her " ghetto booty " when she was speaking. Is that the " Ghetto Booty " you're addressing John. One person is a athlete , the other is a Former Vice Presidential Candidate.

Why would a Vice Presidential Candidate wear clothes that draw attention to her physique ??

Seems we have a double standard here , is it about race John , or politics ?

                  Tell me .

Answer the question. Why would someone who is performing in front of thousands of people intentionally make it appear she wasn't wearing underwear? And why do you think that is praise worthy?

And this is not about race. It is about celebrity and ego.

How do you know that was her intention, John ? Did you read her mind ?

And I don't think I said it was praise worthy , I said I thought it wasn't distasteful , nor was I given the impression she wasn't wearing underwear , and I'm visually impaired.

Stop trying to speak for people when they post and address the subject matter.

I can think of a lot of celebrities who dress more revealing than she does.

                  Not an issue.

She is an ENTERTAINER . That's what pro sports is John , entertainment. It's her job to draw attention to herself. Sells tickets , sell merchandise , sells her clothing line. It's free advertisement. You know in the Free Market Capitalist society that you espouse ? Now you're begrudging someone the opportunity to promote themselves ?

I think the hypocritical morals of the extreme right is destroying America.

Morals are wonderful , but be a beacon of the morals you advocate , not a hypocrite .

Kind of like the scribes and pharisees.

And Palin's clothing is relevant. She's an entertainer too.

comparing Palin and Venus is just redicules!

and there is a big difference in an entertainer and an athlete. You could be butt ugly and still be great at tennis, but a big fat dog faced woman wont be a succesful stripper.

being one does not make you the other,I thought you were smart?

Venus has a nice ghetto booty,Palin's booty is nice-but to flat to be ghetto.

We are becoming a country without standards and without class, and a lot of people like it that way, it is true.

But I wonder what Venus Williams and her fans would say if she were told 'you like like a whore" dressed like this. She'd be all indignant and her fans would be yelling 'racism'. But it would be the truth.

that's a pretty generalizing statement...i don't see an entire country evolving into a population with no standards and no class. i guess your community is different from mine.

and "she'd be all indignant and her fans would be yelling 'racism" is still part of your wondering, not the truth. you couldn't possibly know. i'm willing to bet that if someone in Venus Williams' shoes were told by nobody in particular that she looked like a whore that she wouldn't give a @!$%# what that person thought. but then again, i couldn't possibly know.

John - Given that you seeded this, I am quite puzzled by several of your comments You have vilified those who disagree with your opinion on Ms. Williams garments and then proceeded to your self-fulfilling prophecy that "as expected...........some people have no class." Was your intent to be the sole arbiter of 'class' , to slam only her dress, or to discount any replies counter to your own? It is difficult to see where your intention lies? Are you a fan of tennis or simply outraged by Ms. Williams clothing line? While reading through your thread and occasionally adding a post here and there you appear seem hell bent on provoking a disputes, even to the most benign commentary. When I noted that Ms. Williams, despite her clothing won the match and has a large fan base, your glib and frankly, lackluster retort of 'who cares, who cares, who cares?' This begs the question: do YOU care about your own thread? It appears that when confronted with responses not in line with your own - you are overcome with pique. This insinuates that you seek only endorsements of your own position with minimal to any genuine interest in what other fans of tennis might wish to post. John, do you attend current live tennis? Have you have shopped in any local 'sports authority' stores or big box sporting goods stores recently? Off the rack selections in ladies tennis would likely astound given your outrage of the red/black/flesh toned selection worn by Ms. Williams. Nonetheless, given your flippant and frank intolerance to more than a few of the replies here, your seed seems disingenuous in the face of the real action on the court.................JMO.

The tennis community has always been prudish. I seem to remember back in the 80s that there was some kind of furfurall about a male tennis player wearing black tennis shoes at Wimbledon (Was it McInroe?).

It's hard to take anyone commenting on fashion seriously after that.

Fashion? What fashion? A pair of nude tone tights is fashion? What are you talking about?

I didn't realize being sexually provocative while sweating from your no-no parts was a progressive movement in sports. I thought athletes were above lingerie and nude "illusions". No worries, I am sure Venus will land her playgirl - i mean playBOY spread some day.

I think the freedom to do so is pretty progressive, especially in a sport whose biggest championship has an all-white dress code.

Venus has certainly proven her mettle as a tennis player, she can do whatever she wants as far as I'm concerned. She's not out drinking, sleeping around, partying etc. She works hard, she wins, she's always come off as really cordial and nice when I've seen her in interviews.

so she wore an ugly outfit... if that's her greatest sin, I'm ok with it.

I thought athletes were above lingerie and nude "illusions".

what in the world made you think that? Pro Athletes are people just like everyone else. Some of them want to show pride in their nice bodies, express some sexuality, play with different "looks" and some are...Lindsey Davenport.

How exactly are the "right wingers" hypocrites? No one is calling for it to be illegal. In fact some of us are utilizing our free speech to call skanky-ho outfits what they are.

It's okay to exercise your freedom to be a skank, just look at Paris Hilton, just as it's okay for people to call you out on it.

Actually -- in the strictest sense of the term "fashion" -- it is. Now, whether it is fashionable is a different story.

I have no interest in seeing any woman's booty. But the complaints are mainly coming from the "Maude Flanders" crowd who always have to be up-in-arms about something inconsequential.

No lives were lost. No one was cheated on. No financial fraud was committed. She wasn't even -- technically -- nude. If you don't like it, just do what I do whenever I see Sarah Palin -- go to a different webpage.

Hahaha. On man. That's wicked funny. YOU don't think she's pretty, so she must be a man!! Hahaha. That's good. You should take that act on the road.

When I see the crap that Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan, Brittney Spears and their ilk do. I just think they have to pull those stunts because it's the only way to get publicity when you have no talent.

There's a saying in the entertainment world "bad publicity is better than no publicity".

The Williams sisters have a talent to draw on and this may be a way of extending their entertainment career. I think it's trashy and denigrates her and her sport.

JaiAllen...I saw nothing to indicate any bigotry or racism until you brought it up. Your comments here and on other threads are tacky and denigrates this article and the News Vine.

We all get it, you served in the Navy and had a responsible job. Thank you BTW. But your biography of your life in the Navy doesn't mean squat. Your comments and attitude only denigrates the reputation of those who have served honorably.

There are men on this thread who served their country and have every reason to proud. They respond with honor and integrity. They serve as examples of what the military did for their life.

Somehow I think the Navy missed it's mark with you.

My apologies to John Russell, News Vine staff and all viners if this is not in line with The Code of Honor. If I am suspended or banned so be it. I guess I'm tired of reading the rantings of a boy with no honor.

I'd say the sport was more denigrated by her opponent,

                      Venus whooped-up on her 6-3, 6-3.

6-3 6-3 doesn't sound bad for a first round match.
