for one night only, "A Prairie Home Companion" will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday (Chicago time) in almost 500 movie theaters across the United States and Canada.

(Cost at Chicago area theaters - $ 22)

If opera can find new audiences at the cinema, Keillor hopes his long-running radio show can, too. Via its National Public Radio outlets, it reaches a weekly average of 4 million listeners.

The simulcast will originate from the Fitzgerald Theater in downtown St. Paul, with 11 video cameras shooting both on and offstage. The format will stay the same, with Keillor's droll comedy sketches and earthy, familiar musical acts. Set to appear is the folk duo of Robin and Linda Williams, the sisters Jearlyn and Jevetta Steele, songstress Heather Masse and Guy's All-Star Shoe Band. The main attraction will be rock legend Elvis Costello, who joined Thursday's lineup late in the game.

I think it's a wonderfully folksy fun show but if I'm spending $$$ I want to see it live, not on a screen...

tickets for the live show aren't really too bad....

Ticket prices: $32, $38, $48 ($2 discount for Minnesota Public Radio members.)
