Should it become necessary in the months from now to identify the moment that doomed Obama's presidential aspirations, attention is likely to focus on the hour between nine and ten this morning at the National Press Club. It was then that Wright, Obama's longtime pastor, reignited a controversy about race from which Obama had only recently recovered - and added lighter fuel.
Speaking before an audience that included Marion Barry, Cornel West, Malik Zulu Shabazz of the New Black Panther Party and Nation of Islam official Jamil Muhammad, Wright praised Louis Farrakhan, defended the view that Zionism is racism, accused the United States of terrorism, repeated his view that the government created the AIDS virus to cause the genocide of racial minorities, stood by other past remarks ("God damn America") and held himself out as a spokesman for the black church in America.
In front of 30 television cameras, Wright's audience cheered him on as the minister mocked the media and, at one point, did a little victory dance on the podium. It seemed as if Wright, jokingly offering himself as Obama's vice president, was actually trying to doom Obama; a member of the head table, American Urban Radio's April Ryan, confirmed that Wright's security was provided by bodyguards from Farrakhan's Nation of Islam.
As a Democrat, I am asking Obama to leave TUCC now, today, before all is lost. This is no longer even funny.
I take a different tact.
It is clear that Wright is trying to ignite the flames of racial intolerance as much as whackjobs like Charles Manson did decades before. Obama should go forward, repudiate Wright, and move forward with a positive campaign that will discredit the obsolete views of Rev Wrong.
Between the campaign that will never end, and working in DC, I'd be interested to know how many times he's actually attended church there in the last 2 years. I'd be surprised if you could count it on two hands. That said, I don't think he needs to leave the church.
Wright spent the last 4 days throwing Obama under the bus, driving it over him and then backing up to make sure it's clear that Obama is not his prodigal son. Wright is essentially (and I'm sure knowingly) offering Obama the easy "go ahead and disown all of my political beliefs, I don't like yours either" path to distancing himself. But Obama needs to take advantage and call out (again) that their political ideologies are different. If he doesn't take this opportunity to give it to Wright as good as he got, a whole lot of us will be disappointed.
And he did renounce him after all. Yay. And in harsh terms even. It couldn't have gone better if it were scripted.
So much for that.
We'll see if it's too little, too late. My question is, what took him so long?
Cutty: We'll see if it's too little, too late. My question is, what took him so long?
Excellent example of why he shouldn't have bothered. You aren't going to be happy with him no matter what he does. I wish you'd get to the bottom of that, and stop coming up with hoops for him to jump through, since it isn't going to make a bit of difference to you no matter how many of them he does.
A legitimate question: Does Jeremiah Wright want Obama to lose? Hmmm... think about it. If Obama wins, all the points that Wright makes about how racist and unjust America is goes out the window. If Obama loses, he's proven right, and he gets richer and more powerful as a perceived national black leader. Race baiters like Wright and Sharpton thrive on stirring up anger among victim classes.
A question people are asking today. I have seen the same thing in a couple of blogs. I don't think so though. If Obama is President, Wright will have access to the POTUS that someone of his phiolosophical bent has never had.
Then, if you're right, what the hell is Wright thinking when he says the stuff he says? He's got to know it's not helping Obama.
Wright forced Obama off message today; Obama had to once again distance himself. I'd think that will make Wright even angrier.
You know what's really odd? In a news clip on NBC's Nightly News tonight of that National Press Club meeting, Wright actually said of Obama, "If he wins, he better watch out, because that means I'm coming after HIM next, cuz he'll be representing a government that crushes people..."
So now it sounds like it's turning into some sort of hate war between the two of them, mainly engendered by Wright, probably because he felt shamed that Obama tried to publicly denounce him in that race speech.
Wright is a conflicted, complicated person. I bet Obama rues the day he ever decided to keep sitting in his favorite pew at TUCC. Ah well, it's done now. They will forever be linked.
Yes, I heard that. I think Wright's conflict is he is angry about being declared as possessing "a profoundly distorted view" during Obama's famed Phillie speech, a speech that was broadcast, re-aired, printed and indelibly imprinted in the nation's memory. It is revenge and Wright has drawn a line he dares Obama to cross.
A public feud will only help Obama. He'll come out looking like the sane one who stayed in the church mainly because his entire religious experience revolved around it. He could have moved on as Wright got up their in years, got more angry, more bitter, and more "spirited' in his political remarks. But he stayed knowing that Wright would retire eventually (and he probably wasn't planning to run for President until at least 2012 or 2016). This just lets him make a clean break from Wright's politics -- he can write the old man off and be done -- and it won't look like political expediency, just the result of a public difference of opinion.
I think a public feud takes Obama off-message and that is what the country will see. Many more in the undecided camp will scratch their heads and wonder why this didn't come up earlier in the race.
I'm not a churchgoer, but I would think that those who are must have a religious experience beyond their weekend pew visits. If not, what's it all about?
Sure, it takes Obama off-message. But in reality his message needs only to be that he's electable and that these "distractions" won't resurface with any punch during the general election. He's already won -- the only thing that will stop that now is perceived lack of electability in the minds of superdelegates. He can afford a day or two off-message and perhaps a somewhat less convincing win in North Carolina and a loss in Indiana if the end result is that Wright becomes a dead horse.
Wingnuts come in all shapes sizes and colors.
I have to feel sorry for Obama over this entire issue. He shouldn't be connected to Wright's idiocy and hate, but this defames him by association.
It sounded as if Wright truly was a family friend of the Obama family with how Obama portrayed him. Sounds now like all he's interested in is stirring up racial hatred, even if that screws Obama in the process. Way to go, Wright.
I watched Wright on CSPAN at the NAACP thing. What I heard was a well-read man with a keen intellect and the gift of gab. There wasn't a single question about the Bible, religion, God, Jesus, America or politics that he couldn't respond to brilliantly including all this foolishness about Farrakhan. I saw a likeable, charming, polished speaker whose biggest handicap is he's not the slightest bit afraid to say what he thinks. He spoke at length and he answered every single question we've all heard asked of both him and Obama since this whole silly thing erupted. There isn't an unpatriotic bone in the man's body. It was simply uber-refreshing to hear someone not give a rat's ass about how something he said was going to be spun. I enjoyed it more than I've enjoyed anything this whole stupid campaign. All the pundits are saying how he's hurting Obama, and now Obama has to REALLY distance himself from him -- like he hasn't already. Their cluelessness beggars belief. if there's anything we need to remember about the punditocracy is how often they are dead wrong.
I think Wright should continue to shout his message from the rooftops. The more he does, the more people are going to hear it. And the more people hear it, they more they will see that he simply isn't a single one of the things he's being called by the stuck on stupid people (Wright used that excellent descriptive tonight.) And it was even more clear that he & Barack Obama are two very, very different people -- one's not better than the other mind you. But they couldn't be more different, and the more Reverend Wright is in the spotlight, the clearer that will become.
I copied and pasted this from the NOI website. http://www.finalcall.com/artman/publish/article_4603.shtml
Today, I asked to speak to the Youth Leadership that is called by the enemy, "gang leader." I don't like the term because it doesn't properly describe you. So I will call you "youth leaders," but I want to tell you today why the enemy refers to you as gangs and gang leaders.
Our community, and Black youth in particular, are about to become the victims of a conspiracy emanating from the government of the United States that is designed to bring about the destruction of our youth.
I want you to listen, if you never listened to a man before in your life, please hear me today. You may ask, "Brother Farrakhan, how do you know what the Government is planning?"
The Honorable Elijah Muhammad said to me that, whatever Allah (God) reveals, that is the Truth.
Several weeks ago, while in Phoenix, Arizona, I saw on television the tanks and the armed forces of the Peoples Republic of China rolling over young people, murdering them because they wanted a change. The news also came that the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini, had passed away. As I watched these two apparently unrelated events, a shudder went over my body and I was literally gripping myself, looking at the television screen, because I knew that there was a connection between what is going on in China and what is about to take place in America, but I couldn't put it together at that time.
These are the insane rantings of Louis Farrakhan, who Jeremiah Wright has proclaimed one of the most important men of the 20th-21st centuries.
We can spend the rest of this year exposing Wright's twisted ideologies and statements , if that's what you want.
touche, JR, the rest of this year and then some

The NOI teaches that blacks are gods and whites are demons. The NOI claims that blacks are of the same race as God. According to Elijah Muhammad, "To accept your own means yourself and your kind, your God Who is of you and you are of Him. It was your fathers who created the heavens and the earth, while there is nothing that the white man has created independently. He did not even create himself. The Black Nation is self-created, while the white race is made by one of the gods and scientists of the Black Nation" (Elijah Muhammad, Message to the Blackman, p. 42). The NOI claims that one of these black scientists created the moon. They teach that 66 trillion years ago, he decided to destroy the earth. He drilled a shaft into the earth, filled it with high explosives, and then set it off. He failed to totally destroy the earth but he did blow it into two parts. The smaller part became what we now call the moon (Tape of Louis Farrakhan, Dec. 9, 1990, Compton, Calif.). According to the NOI, a black scientist named Yakub created the white race about 6,000 years ago. They claim that whites are a race of devils (Elijah Muhammad, Message to the Blackman, p. 51). According to Elijah Muhammad, "If you understand it [the Bible] right, you will agree with me that the whole Caucasian race is a race of devils (Ibid., p. 23). The NOI claims that Christianity is the devil's religion and was created to mislead blacks (Ibid., p. 11).
What I want to know is, if Rev. Wright is so brilliant and so perceptive, why does he support the racist organization, the Nation Of Islam?
Man, that's creepy stuff.
This inevitably goes back to Obama and his long-term association with Wright, who thinks Farrakhan is a fine fellow. Goes to judgment.
This reminds me of an article I wrote here on Newsvine on March 16 entitled "Proximate Cause--Who influences you DOES matter: Elijah Muhammad-->MalcolmX-->Louis Farrakhan-->Rev. Wright-->Barack Obama"
"When Minister Farrakhan speaks, Black America listens," says the Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright, likening the Minister's influence to the E. F. Hutton commercials of old. "Everybody may not agree with him, but they listen…His depth on analysis when it comes to the racial ills of this nation is astounding and eye opening. He brings a perspective that is helpful and honest.
"Minister Farrakhan will be remembered as one of the 20th and 21st century giants of the African American religious experience," continues Wright. "His integrity and honesty have secured him a place in history as one of the nation's most powerful critics. His love for Africa and African American people has made him an unforgettable force, a catalyst for change and a religious leader who is sincere about his faith and his purpose." … http://sweetness-light.com/archive/obamas-mentor-gives-farrakhan-his-award
Wright is a former Muslim. And quite probably was a NOI member.
Wright is a former Muslim
Link? Other than the Free Republic that states it in a single off-handed remark with nothing to back it up.
I heard Wright's comment about how when Farrakhan speaks, black America listens. It's a point extremely well taken. Regardless of how you feel about Farrakhan, when someone can get the attention of 20-30 million Americans like that we are completely crazy not to try to find out why.
You've offerred some carefully selected quotations here, much like everyone did with Reverend Wright. They have the same effect -- they scare the hell out of some of you. Which can only happen if you believe that handful of carefully selected quotes represent the entire philosophy of Louis Farrakhan. Which isn't likely. I personally don't know anything about him other than his pretty negative image but I do know enough not to trust that.
I can't help but wonder if we did what intellectual honesty would dictate, and placed those snippets in the context they came from, if Louis Farrakhan might also come out of it smelling like a rose, just like Reverend Wright has. But that's not really what we're talking about. What I'd like to know is what on earth does it have to do with the Obama candidacy?
The Nation of Islam website is accesible with with a couple mouse clicks. On that website, Elijaf Muhammad is given a position of prominence. This is the individual who announced decades ago that whites were a race of devils and contrived the racist fantasy that the white race had been invented by an evil black scientist.
I don't doubt that NOI has done some beneficial things within the 'community', but it is founded on racism. That is the bottom line, and Wright has praise for this man , Farrakhan, and the group. It is unacceptable. Obama refuses to disassociate himself from all this, that is what it has to do with Obama.
JohnRussell, the ignorant choose to be blind and remain uninformed even when presented with the most blatant and obvious of facts that are easily researched and proved as true. This election has really put a focus on how many people choose to be deluded because it feels comfortable to them.
JohnRussell: I don't doubt that NOI has done some beneficial things within the 'community', but it is founded on racism. That is the bottom line, and Wright has praise for this man, Farrakhan, and the group. It is unacceptable.
Lots of things are founded on racism. Did you know that the Pentagon has twice as many bathrooms as necessary because it was built in the 40's, when segregation was the law of the land? It has two sets of bathrooms because it had to have one set for white and one for black. Did you know that the U.S. Military was legally segregated until 1951? Are you aware that there is a network of private schools across the South that sprang up when the federal government mandated integration in the public schools? Many of them are quite good. But they too, are founded on racism. If the reason you aren't calling for these schools to be publicly condemned and immediately closed is because you're unaware of their existence I forgive you. But now that you're aware of them, do you feel that any candidate whose children go to one, or who knows anyone who teaches at one or attends one, should denounce them? Do you see how silly this is?
Obama refuses to disassociate himself from all this, that is what it has to do with Obama.
Obama went to a lot of trouble to disassociate himself from all this. Can you tell me why you think he hasn't? Just exactly what do you want the man to do that he hasn't already done?
The NOI adoration of Elijah Muhammad is current AS OF TODAY. What is confusing about this?
JohnRussell: The NOI adoration of Elijah Muhammad is current AS OF TODAY. What is confusing about this?
I'm sure I was quite clear about what's confusing about this, but I'll do it again.
Why did you say Obama refuses to dissassociate himself from "all this?" What do you want him to do that he hasn't already done?
What does Elijah Muhammad have to do with Barack Obama's candidacy that John Hagee doesn't have to do with John McCain's?
I understand Obama will have a major press conference sometime today and address the Rev. Wright issue. I strongly suggest he stop lying about how many times he was in the pew for one of Wright's offensive sermons. He has never been believable on that score, and now that it is becoming apparent that THIS IS who Rev Wright is, one can conclude that many of the sermons were on these 'offensive' topics. Over the course of 20 years, that's a lot of sermons. Stop lying about this Barack, America will forgive you.

That's a presumption, and a racist one at that. You're presuming that year in and year out Wright was preaching hatred of whites. Where is your evidence of that? Search the site of his former church and you find, for example, the word "racist" mentioned nine times, generally referring to examples of racism in America and how that's against' God's will. Now, how does that make this 20 year record "offensive"?
Has he become a bit of a PITA? Yes. But it he being used by the mainstream media to tar and feather Obama unfairly? Absolutely. You are propagating an opinion based on ignorance - and based on ill intent, as far as I can see.
Why are you dodging my questions John?
Why did you say Obama refuses to dissassociate himself from "all this?" What do you want him to do that he hasn't already done?
What does Elijah Muhammad have to do with Barack Obama's candidacy that John Hagee doesn't have to do with John McCain's?
I'll chime in:
1. There isn't much Obama can do at this point to disassociate himself. Whatever he might try will be too little, too late, and will seem disingenuous and being done only to serve his political purposes.
2. Elijah Muhammad espouses virulent hatred combined with taking action against a large group of Americans -- all of us evil white people. John Hagee does not do this.
Next ...

I'm with you up to a point. Elijah Muhammad has been dead for over thirty years.
I guess that makes it even worse that his junk is all over their website.

In all honesty , you border on being a clown. Rev Wright has been preaching Black Liberation Theology since 1973. He has accused whites of murdering blacks, on his website. He has accused the government of 'murdering' blacks in his church bulletin. He has accused whites, as the government, of attempting to commit genocide against blacks. He has accused the United states of conspiring with Israel to develop a bomb that will only kill blacks and Arabs. You are clueless Hackman.
Yes, I know that Elijah Muhammad is no longer alive! I used the word "espouses" -- present tense -- because his writings are alive and well and read by deluded followers.
BTW, Obama just totally slammed Wright on national television. Wright is playing a game, which is shameful, given the good that he used to do.
And now back to the election, already in progress.
No, this is but round two. Wright can't let Obama get away with today's denunciation. No, Obama must deny Wright thrice.
This is GUILT BY ASSOCIATION pushed by HILLARY CLINTON and, of course, the right wing. This is MCCARTHYISM pure and simple. Check this out:
For good measure on how Democrats like Hillary should behave in this contest, you might want to listen to the following:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdYzGzvXO0U
As for Barak Obama's endorsement of Rev. Wright, if you haven't, please watch:
http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/politics/2008/04/29/sot.obama.outraged.cnn
Clearly Obama and Wright are in different camps. What more do we need to see? Hillary needs to stop the MCCARTHY attacks on Obama.
